DETAILED ITINERARY:
DAY 1: MEETING in Baia Mare
Our first day is the “get together” day in the most important city in Maramures – Baia Mare. We have time for visiting the town, check our bikes, discuss the next days and know each other during the welcome dinner. Is also a good opportunity for meeting the culture and the history of this remote part of the country.

DAY 2: Baia Mare to Breb (60 km ride)
After breakfast we are leaving Baia Mare by bike. Once we are out of the city the traffic will decrease and we will have quiet roads.
Today we will visit two historical wooden churches, both included in UNESCO World Heritage. The first one is in Surdesti, the other one in Plopis, not far one from each other. After visiting we will stop for the lunch.

After lunch we will continue our ride to Cavnic – a former mining city, currently turning into a touristic resort. Is time to climb up to 1,000m altitude before a long descent to our final destination – the beautiful village of Breb. Placed in a quiet valley, the village can be observed from above, just before arriving. Here we will spend our next two days, visiting the local sites.

DAY 3: cycling around Breb (60 km bike ride)
Is time to discover the “historical Maramures” – a place with hidden traditions and lot of “travel back in time” moments. Today we will discover the village of Breb and the surroundings.

First we will ride to the nearby villages along historical routes, part of them not paved. Each village has its own wooden church, visible from distance. While crossing protected areas, we will stop for visiting few old water mills, some of them still in use. In Barsana we will visit the workshop of one of the most appreciated wood works artisans. And we will visit another UNESCO wooden monastery – the tallest wooden church in Europe.

On the way back we will pass through a wild and quiet area, part of it not paved. On the way back we can stop in Ocna Sugatag – an old salt mine, for a relaxing bath in one of the salted water pools.
Back in Breb, we still have the time for visiting few of the local artisans and to visit the corners of the village. Then we will have a relaxing dinner, cooked by our hosts.

DAY 4: Breb to Sighetu Marmatiei (50 KM ride)
(proposed route: Breb – Ocna Sugatag – Feresti – oncesti – valea stejarului – Rona de Sus – Rona de Jos – Sighet)

Is time to leave the beautiful village of Breb and visit other treasures of Maramures. We will ride along beautiful rivers and across rolling hills for visiting another artisans in Valea Stejarului and the Village Museum, before ending our trip in Sighetu Marmatiei – another historical city in Maramures. Picnic lunch on the way.

Once in Sighet, after check in, we will visit few historical places. The most important is the “Communism Memorial” – the place to be visited for understanding the communist regime in this part of Europe.

DAY 5: Sighetu Marmatiei to Sapanta, then to Baia Mare (80 km ride)
In the first part of the day we will ride along Tisa River – the Ukraininan border, for reaching the merry village of Sapanta. Here we will visit one of the most curious sites in Romania – The Merry Cemetery. Despite a cemetery, the locals are honors their passed relative with short satirical poems written directly on the wooden crosses. Today, the cemetery is a very popular place to visit.

After visiting Sapanta we are continuing our route, this time through a deep wood. For 30 km we will ride along forestry road, with no assistance. The route is difficult, climbing to 1,100 m altitude, before descending. The last 20 km are descending, and we can stop to a fish farm for lunch.

We are ending our route in Baia Mare, our starting place.

DAY 6: riding around Baia Mare (45 km ride)
In our last day we will have a more relaxed ride nearby Baia Mare. We will visit Chiuzbaia and Suior Resorts. Optional, we can have a hike in the beautiful Rodna Mountain, depending our time.

Picnic lunch on the way or in a restaurant. Back in Baia Mare for a fare-well diner.
Overnight in Baia Mare. Farewell dinner.

DAY 7: DEPARTURE
After breakfast it is time to say goodbye.
